The global events industry was valued at approximately $1,135.4 billion in 2019 and is expected to grow exponentially during the next decade. Serving a pivotal role in the economy and across a wide spectrum of industries, it’s worth noting that between 60 to 80% of meeting, convention and event planners are female.In contrast, an estimated 20 to 30% of jobs in the technology industry are held by women.

On March 8th the world celebrates International Women’s Day. Observed since the early 1900’s, IWD is an annual moment to commemorate and take pride in the social, economic, culture, and political achievements of women. It is also designed to signal that there is much more work to be done to achieve true equality in various industries and within the many cultures across the planet.
Although women have made tremendous strides since the “suffragette” movement of the early 20th century, continued progress must be made with each successive generation. This March 8th we invite you to join us in celebrating International Women’s Day’s 2021 campaign theme #ChooseToChallenge. It’s an excellent opportunity to recognize the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women and re-dedicate ourselves to accelerating women’s equality.

The question of ‘What does International Women’s Day mean to you?’is a stimulating and thought-provoking springboard for discussion. How one answers may be informed by culture, upbringing, or personal experience. Here are thoughts on the subject the women of Planned wanted to share:
- “It’s about celebrating how far women have come yet recognizing that there is still a long way to go. It’s a commitment to the fight for equality.”
- “In its most simple form, International Women’s Day is about gender equality. It’s about embracing the progress that has been made thus far but understanding there is still work to be done. We’ve seen incredible leaps and bounds made by women in all industries across the globe, as women are holding more seniority positions and continuing to break the glass ceiling. However, it’s important to take into account that it is also about recognizing that in less developed countries, the gender inequality faced goes so far as to be a life or death circumstance and that is not something that people should turn a blind eye to.”
- “International Women’s Day is an opportunity to celebrate girls and women across the world. Not only is it a reminder of how far we have come towards achieving gender equality, but it is also a reminder of how far we still have to go.”
- “To me, International Women’s Day is about celebrating all women everywhere, and the advocates in the fight against gender inequality. It’s also about celebrating the achievements of women, which have often gone unnoticed in the past because there wasn’t space for women to be recognized. A good example of that is STEM continuing to be a male-dominated field, and we forget that the world’s first programmer is considered to be Ada Lovelace (a woman), who wrote the first ever algorithm for a computing machine.”
- “As a young woman living in the 21st century, International Women’s Day means a lot to me. It’s a constant reminder of the battles and the obstacles that women from all professional and ethnic backgrounds had to go through throughout history to fight for their rights. It also reminds me of the work we still have to do as women to let our voice be heard. The fight never stops but this celebration is part of it!”
In addition to considering what the dedicated day means to each woman, it’s important to discuss topics that this day and every day bring up for women. Here are some additional answers shared:
What characteristics and traits do you hope to see instilled in the future generations of women? “I hope I continue to see more women helping each other rise up. Recognizing that we are not in competition with each other, but rather that the success of one, is the success of all; as it is a win for equality.”
What progress have you seen on gender equality in your professional field? “In my professional field, a recent example of progress in the media is Whitney Wolfe’s Bumble IPO. Given that women currently hold a disgracefully low 6% of CEO positions at S&P 500 companies, every new public company with a woman CEO is progress in my eyes. Not only did Whitney achieve this while having a baby, but the Bumble product at its core has a women-empowering mission. Examples like these are barrier-breakers, paving the way for future generations of women.”
What is a women’s empowerment moment that inspired you? “All movements including women fighting for their rights inspire me in some capacity but some of the closest to my heart are White Wednesdays in Iran, and the Women2Drive campaign in Saudi Arabia.”
